Local Health Work

“I was glad [the midwife] asked me, you suffer in silence unless you know of services. I wouldn’t have mentioned it so was glad she asked.”

— Survivor of domestic abuse

What we do

We bring together those providing health services in our local area to embed the components of a Coordinated Community Response to break down barriers between agencies and support partners to respond better to domestic abuse.

We do this by:

  • Implementing comprehensive domestic abuse policies for healthcare services

  • Organising steering groups bringing together key stakeholders in the coordinated community response to domestic abuse

  • Carrying out the role of 'Domestic Abuse Coordinator' (DAC) within healthcare services and helping services to implement their own DAC roles

  • Setting up networks of 'Domestic Abuse Links' within healthcare services to increase the service capacity to respond to the issue

  • Providing domestic abuse training for healthcare professionals to increase awareness and knowledge of the issue

  • Fostering closer relationships between healthcare services and local specialist domestic abuse services to improve referral pathways

  • Improving data collection around the service response to domestic abuse so that the extent to which guidelines and recommendations on responding to the issue have been implemented can be measured
